Just Before Dark

a collection of stuff for your perusal

This video is from an exhibition at the Mobile World Congress by Paris design collective Superbien.  It was made by projecting video onto plain white blocks in the room.  It starts out very simply, but they do a beautiful job with it.

I came across this video of a test shoot that Adam Guzman and Julie Tsao did of the visuals for Nosaj Thing’s live performance.  Rather than just being a backdrop, the visuals act as the sole stage lighting for the show.  The clip shows various samples, all synchronized to the music.  Guzman says of the pieces:

As the set progresses, the imagery becomes less abstract and focused less on light. Patterns begin to form and space begins to open as if the two dimensions exploded into a third. The relationship the graphics create with the performer is interesting. As the graphics become more spatial, the performer flattens, becoming a 2-D cutout version of himself.

Nosaj isn’t playing any East Coast gigs until November, but he’s in the midst of a swing through California right now if you’re out there.  You can get tour dates on his site.

This is a performance from Ukraine’s Got Talent.  The artist animates a story in real time using only a lightbox, some sand, and her hands.  From what I can glean, she later went on to win the competition.

On the subject of Evol

While I’m on the subject of Berlin artist Evol, I should mention how I came across his work in the first place.  A while back, he painted a corridor in Neukolln’s Flamingo Beach Lotel, where each room is designed by a different artist.  Evol’s contribution was this street scene depicted below.

Evol's attention to detail

At first, I assumed this was just another set of night street shots by some photographer.  You can see the attention to detail that he puts into the work (down to the mini-stencils on the box in the third shot).  Just to give you a sense of the scale of this work, here is a shot of the artist at work setting up this setting for a gallery show at the Wilde-Gallery in Berlin.

permalink Take a good look at this photo of a back-alley.  Now take a closer look.  This isn’t a photo, but a stencil by Berlin artist Evol.  He recently posted a video of the making of this stencil (well, same stencil, different cardboard) on his flickr account.  It’s amazing to watch the process in action.

You can see a lot of his other works on his flickr account or older works on display at his website evoltaste.

Last year I saw this video as part of the Guggenheim’s exhibition for Cai-Guo Qiang.  Then, just a few months later, I got to witness his fireworks in person at the Beijing Olympics.  It’s tough to describe his physical artwork, but this video does a great job at showing the process behind his work.
